What effect will this have on immigration in both the short and long term?
Immigration was a hot button topic on the campaign trail with many of the parties laying out plans for upgrading the immigration process with more technology and consistency. Canadians responded to the abrupt fall election by changing very little. The makeup of the government is almost exactly the same as it was before the election.
So, what does this mean for immigration in the short term?
Since coming to power in 2015 the Liberal Party has consistently raised it’s immigration targets. During the COVID pandemic they doubled down on their past actions by increasing the target to 400,000 over the next three years. The Liberal Party has also promised to accept 20,000 Afghan refugees that have fled their home country since the Taliban government took over. Since the 2019 election the Liberals have not had much resistance to these immigration targets. This means that you should expect an ongoing commitment to high levels of immigration as a part of Canada’s post-pandemic recovery.

What will change in the long term?

The liberal party was elected to a minority government. This means they got less than 170 of the 338 total seats available in Parliament. That is going to limit their ability to make long term changes unless they have the support of one of the other parties on the hill.

Look forward to the new government’s plan for 2022-2024 Immigration Levels Plan which will be an update to the existing plan.
